ON HOUSES AND HOLIDAYS

The holidays are fast approaching and it certainly is looking a lot like Christmas here near Inkom, Idaho. An unusual winter storm (we were told it's unusual by the 65-70 year-old-gentleman who has agreed to plow our driveway) swept through Sunday night and into Monday. We now have approximately 15-18" of snow on the ground and the ski hill visible from our bedroom window is open for business. I'm hoping we'll be getting out the snowshoes and head up near the national forest boundary trail for a little outdoor exercise (beats shoveling).

We continue to attempt finishing up all details with the house. We now have a functioning landline phone, but only 5 of 10 jacks in the house work. The QWEST technician was here . . .we figured it had something to do with the telephone cable (recall that the cable from our telephone pole to the house is merely laying on the ground since the "Phone Guys" were too busy to trench it in BEFORE the snow fell). However, it was determined to be a problem with the wiring inside the house. . .so we will again be welcoming the "Electrician Guys" back.

Last week we also determined that the insulation in our bonus room/attic area was not completely installed or at least incorrectly installed. The "Insulation Guys" were to have returned last Friday, but they decided the roads were too bad. Glenn pointed out that the snow on our little hill had literally been blown away, that our drive was down to the basic gravel and it would really be a good day to come out since they could get their truck near our house. . .and a snowstorm was expected for Monday (see above!). But they said, no, they'd be out Monday. Of course, that didn't happen so getting our insulation up to snuff remains on the list.

Glenn has also determined that we don't really have a problem with the furnace, but since it was installed in the dog-days of summer, we think the "Furnace Guys" just left it on the factory settings. We need them to return and adjust/recalibrate the fan as it's not pushing enough air into our bathroom at the other end of the house.

Oh, well. We're actually safe, warm, snug in here and the views still startle us on a daily basis. We would just like to get this litany of "final touches" finished!

Speaking of views, two nights ago with his spotting scope Glenn saw one of the area's resident moose! Being busy in the kitchen, I missed it as by the time I ran to the scope it had wandered off into the brush line.

After having been dug out of the snow storm yesterday, we accepted the Jurgens' invitation for a ride into town and grocery shopping. They were correct in saying "Let's go tonight; it'll be busier tomorrow and we won't have to go!" So off the five of us went -- returning about 9:00 p.m. with sacks of provisions for the coming weeks.

Glenn succumbed to a little bit of impulse and purchased an 8-pound prime rib roast for the New Year. We'll be spending Christmas at the Jurgens' (well, after all they do have a tree!). Christmas eve will be a ham dinner; Christmas day is appetizers, snacking, cards and games!
Although I am missing my family in Michigan and Illinois, we are looking forward to the holidays being spent with Meghan, Joshua and the Smiley-Guy. According to his parents, he enjoyed his visit with Santa at the local supermarket, however, no one really knows what he asked Santa to bring him. We suspect it had something to do with unlimited bottles, lots of hugs and kisses and perhaps a treat for his cat, Pearl!
