FISHING WITH FAMILY HISTORY

It's been over a week since I last updated this little online journal. My birthday has now come and gone; hitting the "double nickels" as Glenn calls it means I'm now 'authentic' for those senior citizen discounts!
Friday evening the kids stayed for dinner; since no one needed to get up early the next morning for work, we relaxed and enjoyed just chatting for a bit.
The weather on Saturday would have been great for trying out some of the more challenging runs at Pebble Creek Ski Area but I just didn't feel like it. Instead, Glenn and I drove into Poky to run some errands. The week before, I'd stopped in the St. Vincent de Paul store with Meghan and noted they had two brand-new, still-in-the-box, hand-held ice augurs. So, we popped in again to see if they were still there . . .and sure enough, we're now the proud owners of a StrikeMaster Augur (Made in Sweden, doncha know?).
Later that afternoon, we drove up (literally, higher elevation) to the boundary trail and spent about an hour and a half snowshoeing and looking at the scenery. Absolutely gorgeous.
That evening, Glenn made me dinner. He'd purchased two nice New York strip steaks for the grill and an interesting bottle of wine called Menage a Trois. Not kinky . . . .but interesting in that it is a blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Zinfandel. Very smooth and perfect accompaniment for the steaks.
Once again on Sunday we took to the ice at Devils Creek Reservoir, but this time I wore terrific boots. While visiting Sportsman's Warehouse on Thursday -- buying maggots for ice fishing -- Glenn found two pairs of WOMEN's Baffin Boots (made in Canada!); one pair was MY SIZE and they were ON SALE; 50% off! So, quick-thinking he bought me a pair for my birthday. Now, I can go ice fishing without putting bread wrappers over my feet before putting on my formerly dry-rotted and cracked boots!
Anyway. . . despite what the fishing calendar said, we took off for Devils Creek Reservoir to give it a try. Previously, while getting our tackle in order, Glenn told me to pick out a lure, which I did. On Sunday, I used it. . . and caught three nice rainbows, including the one in the photo. The nostalgia comes into play in that the lure is one left by my dad. So, it's at least 34 years old since dad died in 1975. Makes me wonder if he ever caught anything on it and what he'd say to know his daughter, all these years later, has followed in his footsteps to become an ice-fisher and fly-fisher.
In total, we brought home five more rainbows, bringing our take-home total to 43 rainbows in five outings.
After fishing, Glenn humored me with a drive through the Weston Canyon. We checked out both Deep-Creek and Weston Reservoirs for future fishing expeditions and stopped at the Red Rock Pass and Monument.
The "official" birthday was Monday, which Glenn and I spent caring for little Miley-Guy. He is so personable and good-natured that both of us spend a good deal of each day just laughing at his antics. That evening, when the Jurgens arrived to pick up their little bundle, I opened my gift from them. . .two tickets to the local Mystique Theater for Friday, March 6. Dinner and the show The Heart of Broadway which is apparently lots of singing and dancing to show tunes. Sounds like fun and something neither Glenn nor I have done yet.
I did bail out of the second-round of Women's Ski Clinic. The weather yesterday was iffy, plus, I realized that the $60 I would spend could be applied to a season-pass for next year. They go on sale Sunday, March 1 for $249. Having done the first series in the clinic, I think -- given my own pace -- I can at least tackle all of the 'blues' at Pebble . . . and with a season pass, I won't hesitate to go up there anytime I have the opportunity -- it's only 8 minutes to get there and if I don't like the conditions, can easily come home!!
No specific plans for the upcoming weekend. . . but with so much to explore in Idaho . . . we're sure to have at least one 'adventure' on which I can report!
