On Sunday, May 10 the Jurgen family gathered here to celebrate two big family events. First, Meghan experienced her first Mother's Day as a mom! Second, we partied in recognition of Glenn's 60th birthday which would occur on Monday, May 11.Of course, when our guests arrived, Glenn was still in his work clothes. . . on a roll washing windows and tidying up the window wells around our basement and garage. However, a few moments in the shower and he was all gussied up for the festivities.
Our dinner menu for the day (selected by the man of the hour, sort of): Shrimp cocktail and fresh strawberries as appetizers, followed by hard rolls with sesame seeds, and green salad with homemade tangy herb dressing. We then had t-bone steaks on the grill, a new mashed potato casserole recipe and broccoli. This we followed up with yellow cake with penuche frosting, again by request. Miles cooperated by napping for two hours during dinner time.
Other than the quiet afternoon spent just enjoying each other's company, the highlight of the party was the opening of gifts. Clandestinely, Meghan and Linda mailed 'invitations' several weeks in advance to many of Glenn's extended family and friends. He received well over two dozen cards, letters, notes and photos from people who are a special part of his life. Of particular interest, Glenn got an 'old-timers' scrapbook from the Hillesland family, a "gold panning kit" from old school chum Gary Hesseltine and several scratch-off lottery tickets which netted him about $12 total.
The next phase of this surprise endeavor will involve organizing the items into a scrapbook for him to savor until he turns 70!
Glenn has also been heard to remark on many occasions that a "good day" is when he can find his wallet, keys, hair brush and glasses -- simultaneously. So, Linda made up a care package which contained a new hair brush (on a lanyard to wear around his neck), a key ring (the clip-on your belt kind with retractrable cord -- as long as he can find his pants he can find his keys!) and 10 pairs of sunglasses! She considered buying him a wallet-on-a-chain, but when he loses that -- she finds the money!
The second special gift Glenn received from Linda, Meghan, Josh and Miles is a hand-held gps unit. Since he's planning to do some public-land hunting and is unfamiliar with the area, the whole family figured this gift would come in handy. Also, Linda bought four lottery tickets for him, too. However, these purchases were made through Idaho Fish and Game. Glenn now has two chances each to win hunting permits for mule deer and elk. If he wins, the license can be used anywhere in the state where hunting is allowed.
So, the second Sunday of May, 2009 marked two "Miles"-tones. Meghan's first actual Mother's Day and Glenn celebrating his (as friend Peggy Kushuba wrote) "30th anniversary of his 30th birthday" in our new house in Idaho, with new grandson Miles in his arms.
