Mothers' Day and Glenn's birthday arrive annually just a few days apart (occasionally, the same day) and so we generally celebrate them together. Sunday, May 9 continued the tradition with the two of us venturing down the hill to the Jurgen household for festivities.
Meg and I shared menu responsibilities; she prepared baked beans and ham steaks w/pineapple glaze on the grill (Josh did the barbecue chores). I carried down sunflower seed bread, a green salad with strawberries, and an oddly-shaped (due to batter overflow malfunction) yellow cake with chocolate frosting (Glenn's request) and ice cream.
The weather cooperated somewhat in that it wasn't (A) snowing, sleeting or raining and (B) not so cold we needed winter coats to venture forth. It was still chilly enough, though, that we spent the majority of the afternoon inside, with the exception of taking Miles outside briefly to let off a little steam by wandering around his yard.
One game of Scrabble while Miles slept (which I won, but it was a good thing -- having drawn BOTH blanks, the X, Y, Z, K, Q, U and a number of other high-point value tiles, it would have been downright embarrassing to lose!), a glass or two of wine, nice meal, gifts and cake and ice cream -- a soothing way to spend some holidays and a Sunday afternoon.
Yesterday was Glenn's official birthday which he 'celebrated' by accompanying Miles and me to Book Babies at the Marshall Library. We then had lunch at Craigo's, a pizza-buffet restaurant and afterward stopped in at Lowe's for a look-see on a couple of items. We ended up purchasing a really nice carpet remnant 12' x 19' for our lower level -- which remains unfinished but we use it often for exercising, etc. Miles particularly enjoyed riding in the 'racecar' cart which feature a steering wheel for him. He's a good driver; didn't run into anything! :-)
As I type this, Miles is napping and we are sharing this day with a bonus guest -- Pearl, his cat -- who is downstairs waiting to be taken home. Some incident resulted in her having a severe bloody nose yesterday; Meg's soft heart meant Pearl stopped here today in case she needed a trip to the vet. We'll be taking her home soon as the bleeding has subsided and she's eating well.
The weather promises to remain chilly today so we most likely will not be taking Miles outside, but at least it has temporarily stopped looking like winter and we may be finally headed into not just literal springtime, but feeling like it as well!
